Thursday 13 August 1914 – We Lost 11
Great Britain and France declare war on Austria-Hungary, claiming that the small contingent of Austrian troops now stationed on the Franco-German frontier pose a direct menace to France.
The first Royal Flying Corps aircraft begin to set out for Amiens in France. The first aircraft to land in France is a BE2a of 2nd Squadron piloted by Lieutenant Hubert Dunsterville Harvey-Kelly. Lieutenant Harvey-Kelly will be killed in action on 29th April 1917 while serving as the commanding officer 19th Squadron Royal Flying Corps.

Private Duncan McDonald of the Cameron Highlanders is listed as going missing on the La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial having probably fallen overboard from his transport from Dover to France. He is only 16-years old.
