Friday 2 October 1914 – We Lost 38
The British force in West Africa that captured Bapele Bridge captures Maka.
A detachment of Royal Marines and Royal Engineers land at Pitti and try to circle behind the German positions and cut the railway in the rear. The attack fails and they limp back to Douala, sodden, muddy and unsuccessful, defeated by the swamps and dense brush.
Today’s losses include:
- Two 20-year old soldiers serving in Guards Regiments
- The first of two brothers to lose their lives in the Great War
- Drummer Walter Frederick Dell (Grenadier Guards) dies of wounds at age 20.
- Private Ivan Wilfred Bradford (Coldstream Guards) dies of wounds at age 20. His brother will die of wounds as a prisoner of war in August 1918.
