Monday 4 January 1915 – We Lost 76
The submarine C31 (Lieutenant George Pilkington) is lost through unknown causes off the Belgian Coast. It is presumed that she has struck a mine and there are no survivors from her crew of 16.
C31 losses include:
- Lieutenant Pilkington’s whose brother-in-law will be killed in June 1916.
- Sub Lieutenant Keith Morehead Gunning Campbell is killed. He is the son of Major General Gunning Campbell and dies at age 22.
- Able Seaman Walter John Cobb is also killed at age 27. His brother will be killed on submarine E6 in December of this year.
The merchant ship Ashdene (Master Jack John Willett age 47) is lost while sailing from London to the Tyne. Her crew of nine is lost.
