Thursday 7 January 1915 – We Lost 100
Captain Eustace Jotham (Sikhs Indian Army) is killed during operations at Miranshah against the Khostawal tribesmen at age 31. While commanding a party of about a dozen of the North Waziristan Miltia his troop is attacked in a nullah fifteen miles west of Miranshah and almost surrounded by an overwhelming force of some 1,500 tribesmen. He gives the order to retire and could have escaped himself, but sacrifices his life trying to rescue one of his men who has lost a horse. For his actions today he will be awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.
