Twelve German aircraft in loose formation fly in from the sea and bomb Dunkirk.  British, French and Belgian machines all take off to challenge the Germans and succeed in bringing down one by rifle fire.  The Royal Flying Corps pilot responsible is either Captain F V Holt or Lieutenant R P Mills, both flying BE2c’s.

Today’s highlighted casualty is

Corporal George Latham (Lancashire Fusiliers) is shot at dawn at age 23 for desertion, becoming the first NCO to be executed during the Great War.  He deserted at Le Cateau on 27th August and was absent for several months eventually returning as a straggler.
