Second Lieutenant Stephen Dendrino (Royal Flying Corps) is killed in action at age 27 when shot in flight by Oswald Boelcke. Boelcke wrote in his logbook that his opponent’s machine continued to fly in even circles owing to the controls having been fastened in place by rubber bands. As an officer in the P and O service he twice escaped shipwreck through being transferred from vessels which sank in the Channel.  He is also the nephew through marriage of Major General J W G Tulloch

  • Captain Cornelius Thorne MC (East Surrey Regiment) is killed at age 24. He has two brothers who will be killed in action, the first was killed in September 1915 the second not until May 1940.
  • Second Lieutenant Robert Gordon Hamilton (Royal Field Artillery) is killed at age 22. He is the son of the Reverend R M Hamilton.
  • Second Lieutenant John Arthur Teale (Northumberland Fusiliers) dies of wounds received the previous day at age 24. He is a school teacher in 1914 at Ryhill.
  • Second Lieutenant John Beausire Copeland Capper MC (Royal Field Artillery) is killed in action at age 20. He is the son of Major General ‘Sir’ John Edward Capper.
  • Second Lieutenant George Edwin Chapman (Yorkshire Regiment) dies of wounds received in action two days prior at Morval at age 20. He was a Gold and Silver Medalist in Chemistry at University College, London, a Goldsmid and Ellen Watson Scholar at University College and a Mathematical Scholar at the University of London.
  • Second Lieutenant Arthur Hammond Butler Shipley (Yorkshire Regiment) is killed at age 21. He is the son of the Reverend Arthur Granville Shipley Vicar of All Saint’s Pontefract.
  • Lance Corporal Henry William Bourne Palin (Canterbury Regiment) is killed at age 32. He is the great uncle of Monty Python actor Michael Palin.
  • Private Thomas Richard Hurley (Auckland Regiment) is killed in action at age 21. His brother will be killed in April 1918.
  • Private William Elliot (Bedfordshire Regiment) is killed at age 21. His brother lost his life serving in the Perian Gulf in April.
  • Private William Horace Vickers (Sherwood Foresters) is killed at age 21. His brother will be killed next April.
  • Private John Thomas Machin (Coldstream Guards) is killed at age 20. His two brothers will be killed in the War.
  • Private Charles James Lavender (Royal West Kent Regiment) is killed at age 22. His brother will be killed in October 1918 in Baghdad.
  • Private Arthur Hesselden (West Yorkshire Regiment) is killed. His brother will be killed next month.
  • Private Harry Peart (Saskatchewan Regiment) is killed at age 35. His brother was killed in October 1915.
  • Private Patrick Gallagher (Canterbury Regiment) is killed at age 36. His brother will be killed next February.
  • Private Arthur John Allan (British Columbia Regiment) is killed at age 26. His brother was killed last June.
  • Private Frederick Charles Symonds (Grenadier Guards) dies of wounds at age 21. His brother will be killed in March 1917.
  • Private Arthur George Stallard (Hampshire Regiment) is killed at age 17. His brother will be killed next April.
