The destroyer HMS Cheerful (Lieutenant Harman A L Bond RNR) is sunk in northern Scottish waters, 6 miles SSE of Lerwick, Mainland, Shetland Islands. Cheerful strikes a mine, presumably laid German U-boat-laid, off Helli Ness, Cunningsburgh on the SE side of the main Shetland Island. Forty of her crew are killed while 18 men are saved

- Lieutenant Ronald Stanley Chibnall (Suffolk Regiment) is killed at age 20. His brother will be killed in August 1918.
- Gunner Joshua Henry Pugh (Royal Field Artillery) dies of wounds at age 36 in the Ypres Salient. His brother died of wounds in May 1915.
