Chaplain Noel Elliot Hawdon (attached Trench Mortar Battery) dies of broncho-pneumonia as a result of influenza in hospital at age 32 less than two weeks after his brother has been killed in action while another brother was killed in 1916.  In 1911 as a clergyman in York, New Zealand he was summoned before a local magistrate for assaulting two 13-year old boys. The evidence presented showed he dropped a half a crown in the street and as the boys were walking towards him with it he turned and accused them of attempting to steal the money. He told them to choose between a thrashing and the police. The frightened boys walked behind him to his home where he beat them both “severely”. He was found guilty and fined.

Today’s losses include:

  • A Military Chaplain
  • Multiple families that will lose two sons in the Great War

Today’s highlighted casualties include:

  • Second Lieutenant Matthew Lambroughton (Seaforth Highlanders) dies of wounds in Lille at age 30. His brother was killed in April of this year.
  • Driver Robert Howsan Gathercole (Royal Field Artillery) dies on service. His brother was killed last May.
