Today’s highlighted casualties include:

  • Lieutenant Colonel William Robert Aufrere Dawson DSO (commanding 6th Royal West Kent Regiment) dies on service at age 27.
  • Captain Ruper William Nevill DSO (Rifle Brigade) dies on service at age 34. He is the son of Lord George Montacute Nevill and grandson of ‘Sir’ William Nevill 1st Marquess of Abergavenney.
  • Lieutenant William Henry Lionel Sommerville MC (Royal Ordinance Corps) dies on service at age 36. He is the son of the late Alexander Annardah Sommerville JP.
  • Chaplain ‘the Reverend’ William David Abbott dies of influenza at Dieppe at age 35. He is assisting in the process of identifying and burying War casualties on the Western Front when he becomes ill. He is the son of the late Reverend David Wyley Abbott, Vicar of Cardington.
  • Private Robert J Wheeler (Wiltshire Regiment) dies on active service in Germany at age 28. His two brothers will also die serving their King the first in October 1918 the second on HMS Courageous in September 1939 while serving as a Royal Marine.
  • Private Robert Smith (Labor Corps) dies on service at age 23.  His brother died of wounds in September 1915.
